Monthly Maintenance Tips for Your Home

JANUARY

  • Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors 

  • Check gutters and roofs for ice dams and icicles

  • Clean the basement, garage and other indoor areas 

  • Check for drafts around doors and windows

  • Change furnace filters


FEBRUARY

  • Check caulk and grout in all bathrooms

  • Check and refill water softener 

  • Clean exhaust fans in all bathrooms

  • Clean refrigerator coils

  • Deep clean all appliances


MARCH

  • Clean garbage disposal 

  • Clean gutters and make sure they drain well 

  • Clean and replace window screens

  • Check the roof for damage

  • Check that the sump pump is draining properly

  • Make sure all downspouts are operational and directing water away from your home.


APRIL

  • Clean ceiling fans and reverse to counter-clockwise 

  • Inspect driveway and sidewalks for cracks

  • Trim tree branches away from the house

  • Clean refrigerator coils

  • Clean blinds and curtains 

  • Check exterior siding for damage

  • Open the windows to let in fresh air as temps rise


MAY

  •  Clean clothes dryer exhaust

  •  Inspect and clean decks

  • Tune up the lawnmower and fertilize the lawn

  • Test sprinkler system

  •  Lay mulch around flowerbeds and trees

JUNE

  • Clean grill and outdoor furniture 

  • Power wash siding and walkways

  • Inspect foundation and crawlspace

  • Service air conditioner

  • Clean and apply a sealant to wood fences


JULY

  • Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors 

  • Flush out the hot water heater 

  • Clean debris from window wells 

  • Trim bushes away from AC unit and walkways


AUGUST

  • Check for leaks around toilets and sinks

  • Clean out the garage

  • Clean or replace shower heads

  • Ensure grading around the home is sloping away

  • Thoroughly clean the inside of the fridge


SEPTEMBER

  • Check ceiling fans and reverse to clockwise

  • Inspect the chimney and clean fireplace flues

  • Have your furnace serviced

  • Fertilize and aerate lawn

  • Clean baseboards and trim

  • Schedule sprinklers to be winterized


OCTOBER

  • Place foam covers over exterior faucets

  • Inspect caulking around windows and doors

  • Clean washing machine

  • Have the air conditioner winterized

  • Have furnace serviced


NOVEMBER

  • Place foam covers over exterior faucets

  • Inspect caulking around windows and doors

  • Clean washing machine

  • Have the air conditioner winterized

  • Have furnace serviced


DECEMBER

  • Place foam covers over exterior faucets

  • Inspect caulking around windows and doors

  • Clean washing machine
