Below is the start of a list of where to begin with keeping up with your home for the new year! Also, be sure to use our monthly home maintenance tips!
1. DECLUTTERING YOUR HOME
To keep yourself on track, get started now and schedule a time to spend organizing, sorting through piles of clothes, papers, and removing unwanted items from your home.
2. PLANNING A ROOM RENOVATION
If you've been planning on any larger projects in your home, this is the perfect time to start planning and executing. Make sure to allocate plenty of time and proper budgeting, for contractors.
3. PUTTING AWAY HOLIDAY DECORATIONS
It's not necessarily the "when" of putting the holiday decorations away, it's more about the how. Have a specific space and storage bins that make it easy to both put away and bring out so it never becomes a mountain of a task. I recommend clear containers so you can easily see what is in each container for when it's time to redecorate and purchasing a few extra so they are easily stackable - this makes a tremendous difference in any storage space.
4. TACKLING LITTLE PROJECTS
You may not have thought to pull that ever-growing list of little home improvement projects over to your New Year's resolutions list, but with the right planning, you have the opportunity to cross it all off once and for all. Break out the tasks throughout the year and put it on the fridge or family bulletin board so you can track your progress all year round.
5. ORGANIZING A SPECIFIC SPACE
Have you been ignoring that mudroom closet or bathroom linen way too long. Now is the time to make a change by tackling one space at a time but doing it throughly. We suggest taking everything out of the space, going through it all and sort into three piles - (1) Keep (2) Donate (3) Throw. Have a box on hand for the donate items so you don't end up putting them back in the space and a garbage bag for the trash. Now, establish a plan for what will stay there, then measure and research storage options for the best system to keep those items organized and in place. Remembering you are more likely to use the items if they are easily visible and accessible. Trust me, there are things in there you completely forgot you had. Remember to wipe down those shelves before putting stuff back.
